We are NOT calm about this.
ACOTAR 6 has a release date. After years of waiting, the next A Court of Thorns and Roses book is confirmed for October 27, 2026. And it's not a standalone follow-up. It's the start of a three-book arc, with ACOTAR 7 arriving January 12, 2027.
We're tracking everything confirmed, everything speculated, and every trope prediction based on the series pattern. We'll keep updating this post as news drops.
What's Confirmed
- Release date: October 27, 2026
- It's part of a three-book arc. ACOTAR 7 is confirmed for January 12, 2027. A third book in this arc is expected to follow.
- Same world, same cast. We're staying in Prythian. The existing characters (Inner Circle, the courts, the politics) are all in play.
- Sarah J. Maas is writing it. (Obviously. But people asked.)
The Big Question: Whose Book Is It?
This is the debate that's been splitting the fandom since A Court of Silver Flames ended. The two leading theories:
Theory 1: Elain's book
Elain Archeron is the only sister without a dedicated book. She's been quietly developing in the background: the seer powers she can't control, her complicated relationship with Lucien (her confirmed mate), and the tension with Azriel that Maas has been building since ACOMAF. The breadcrumbs are there. The garden scenes, the moments of unexpected steel, the fact that she volunteered to go into the Hewn City. A lot of readers expect this to be her POV.
Theory 2: Azriel's book
The bonus chapter from A Court of Silver Flames (if you know, you know) made Azriel the center of more fan theories than any other character. His shadows, his complicated feelings about Elain, his centuries of unrequited love for Mor. Maas has been keeping him mysterious on purpose. Whether this is Elain's or Azriel's POV, the two are almost certainly linked.
Our prediction: dual POV, Elain and Azriel. Maas did it with Nesta and Cassian in ACOSF. The pattern fits.
Trope Predictions (Based on the Series Pattern)
Every ACOTAR book follows a trope pattern. Here's what we expect based on what Maas has done before:
Almost guaranteed
- Slow Burn: Every ACOTAR pairing builds over multiple books. Elain and Azriel have been building since book 2.
- Fated Mates: Elain's mating bond with Lucien is confirmed. How Maas handles this (broken bond? rejected bond? chosen bond?) is the central tension.
- Forbidden Love: Azriel wanting Elain while she's mated to his friend. Rhys telling Azriel to stay away. The "forbidden" element is already baked in.
- Court Politics: The political threads from ACOWAR and ACOSF (the human queens, the courts' fragile alliances, Koschei) need resolution.
- FMC with Powers: Elain is a Seer. Maas has barely scratched the surface of what that means.
Very likely
- He Falls First: Azriel has been falling for years. We've watched him unravel in real time.
- Angst: A love triangle involving a mating bond, centuries of loneliness, and unresolved trauma? The angst levels will be catastrophic.
- Power Reveal: Elain's seer abilities and her connection to the Cauldron are likely to escalate dramatically.
- Protector Romance: Azriel's entire personality is "protect at all costs." With Elain in the center of whatever's coming, this trope is locked in.
Could go either way
- Enemies to Lovers: Depends on whether Lucien becomes an antagonist or an ally. The mating bond triangle could push this direction.
- Love Triangle: Elain, Azriel, Lucien. Maas has historically resolved triangles decisively. The question is how long she stretches it.
The Spice Question
ACOTAR spice levels have escalated with each pairing. ACOTAR (Feyre/Tamlin) was Warm. ACOMAF (Feyre/Rhys) was Spicy. ACOSF (Nesta/Cassian) was Scorching. If the pattern holds, book 6 will be at least Spicy. Azriel's shadows and Elain's "innocent gardener who's anything but" persona suggest Maas will lean into the contrast.
What to Read While You Wait
October is a long time from now. These will help:

- Why You Love ACOTAR (And Where to Find More of Each Trope) for trope-matched deep dives.
- Best Slow Burn Fantasy Romance because the Elain/Azriel slow burn has primed you.
- The Serpent and the Wings of Night for forbidden-love-in-a-deadly-setting energy.
- A Fate of Wrath and Flame for court politics and an FMC figuring out who she is.
